April 13, 2017
August is one week old today!
Things we love about you already:
- Your smell
- All the little sounds you make, including chirping like a little chick and squawking like a velociraptor just like your sissy did. You also let out the cutest little sigh “ahh”, especially after you sneeze.
- How sleepy you are
- How sweet, calm, and peaceful you are
- You have Dada’s eyes
- You resemble your sister when she was a newborn
- How you smile in your sleep
- Rubbing my cheek against your fuzzy little head
- EVERYTHING
Nursing: You’re a natural! You nursed for the first time shortly after birth, and since then it’s been smooth sailing:) During the day you nurse about every 1-3 hours and every 2-4 hours at night.
Sleep: You’re a sleepy boy and don’t often have your eyes open:) Right now you’re still sleeping the majority of the day. You’re usually awake for the longest periods in the late morning and in the evening around the time mama and dada eat dinner. At night you have been waking every 2-4 hours then mama will change you, sometimes nurse you again, and then you go right back down.
Here are some of the wonderful memories from your first week on Earth:
Thursday, April 6
Happy Birthday, August! You made a quick, peaceful entrance into the world on the morning of April 6, 2017. Mama woke up at 1:24am and knew you were on the way! We arrived at the hospital at 3:00am, and you made your arrival at 4:56am. We loved you so from that very first moment.
We left the birthing center around 10:00am and went home to begin enjoying our life as a family of four:)
When we got home, you got to meet your big sissy, Scarlett! She came straight up to you and gave you a kissie on your little head. Your sister loves you so much already!
Then you and Scarlett exchanged gifts: Scarlett got you a blue bear just like her white bear (her first stuffed animal love), and you got a monkey for big sissy since she loves “no more monkeys jumping on the bed “.
You also got to meet Grandma and Poppy Horvath and Uncle Max for the first time!
After your visitors left, we relaxed and rested for the rest of the afternoon.
That evening Aunt Jessica and your cousin Liam came all the way from Chicago to see you on your birthday
First night at home!
Friday, April 7
The next morning we went back to the birthing center for newborn screenings. Everything looked good, but we have to do a follow up hearing test next month for your left ear, most likely due to fluid buildup from birth.
Back home finally–there’s those eyes!
Since we weren’t at the hospital for very long, we didn’t really have any good first pics of just you, so we did a little baby photoshoot:)
Saturday, April 8
Today you had your first doctor appointment with Dr. Shaw!
Your weight today was 7 lbs 7 oz (which was your sister’s weight at birth!) You lost 6 oz, but with the way you’ve been nursing, you’ll gain it all back, and then some, in no time:) You had no signs of jaundice and Dr. Shaw says you’re a healthy boy!
Afterwards you spent some time outside for the first time with Scarlett and Dada.
And what a baby boy you are:)
I see those eyes! (Well, at least for a little bit:)
Snuggles with Mama (how we spend the majority of our days right now:)
Sunday, April 9
Good morning!
Grandma, Poppy, Aunt Lindsey, Uncle Max and Kristy came to visit you today!
You decided to wait until everyone left to wake up:)
Monday, April 10
Today was pretty uneventful and Mama only snapped a few pictures, but what they lack in quantity, they make up for in cuteness.
Tuesday, April 11
Sleepy baby boy:)
He’s awake!
You were finally awake long enough for a little bit of playtime on the elephant mat.
First sponge bath! You did pretty well!
Time for the baby elephant to dry off:)
Happy to be clean! This was the first day mama really noticed you smiling in your sleep–you smiled probably 20 times in a row sleeping in your ellie towel:)
Wednesday, April 12
More sleepy smiles:)
Grandma and Poppy came over to visit you and they brought some yummy food for dinner, too
Grandma and Poppy wore you out;)
Thursday, April 13
You are a week old today! To celebrate turning a week old, you have a new bellybutton to show off! Your big sissy lost her umbilical cord stump when she turned a week old, too.
You visited the Easter Bunny for the first time! Mama was in the picture because the Easter Bunny might be a little to germy for a new baby (from hopping through the grass and dirt, of course).
My happy baby boy.
Goodnight!
This week and your sister’s first week were by far the best weeks of our lives! We love you so much August Joe, and we can’t wait to experience the weeks to come with you!
I Will
Who knows how long I’ve loved you
You know I love you still
Will I wait a lonely lifetime
If you want me to– I will.
For if I ever saw you
I didn’t catch your name
But it never really mattered
I will always feel the same.
Love you forever and forever
Love you with all my heart
Love you whenever we’re together
Love you when we’re apart.
And when at last I find you
Your song will fill the air
Sing it loud so I can hear you
Make it easy to be near you
For the things you do endear you to me
You know I will
I will.
